Stocking Up!

Stocking up before the next round of storms (plus it is coupon time at Costco). How can we handle another 10 to 16 inches? Where will we put all of that snow?

Some things never change

A blast from the past... History repeating itself (to the 3rd power)!

How to wear out three wild four year olds

We were getting a touch of cabin fever today, so I decided to bundle up the girls and take them out to play in the snow. Getting the girls dressed to play in the snow is not an easy task by myself… but I was desperate to burn some of the extreme energy that my house seemed to possess with the girls literally running in circles. The weather service is predicting another snowstorm tomorrow and it seems to get more massive, the closer it gets. So, we had to get out of the house this afternoon!

First, we waded through the front yard sliding down the bank to the sidewalk. We did it over and over.

Then we threw snowballs in the street (when cars were not passing of course).

Then we made snow angels on the side of the mountain…..

… and started to climb the big mountain of snow next to our driveway.
… which naturally led to sliding or the girls called it sledding down the big mountain of snow. That kept the girls occupied for a long time.

Mission accomplished! Three tired little girls and a house that was finally quiet.

Happy 4th birthday Gracie, Ellie and Sarah!

It is hard for me to believe that my babies are four years old. Thanks to the massive snowfall, our big birthday plans changed. We rescheduled our duckpin bowling outing on Saturday and on Sunday neither set of grandparents could make it to our house for cake. So, we had to find alternative ways to make the girls’ birthday extra special. Chris and I blew up 100 balloons and put them in the family room. The girls were thrilled to see the room filled with balloons when they woke up in the morning. Balloons were flying everywhere all day. Since getting to church was impossible, we decided to get the girls out of the house and play in the snow. The snow was too deep for the girls to play in, but they were able to stand on the sidewalk and destroy Daddy’s shoveled walls of snow. The girls were thrilled to have an instant snow fort that was created when Chris moved his car from the street and into the driveway. Their snow fort had a slide and lots of big snowballs to carry around and smash on the driveway. After two days of snow falling constantly and being confined inside, it was nice to be outside in the sunshine.

After a shower and lunch, it was cake time! I made each of the girls a small Mickey Mouse cake frosted in their favorite color for their birthday. They were thrilled to have their own cake.

Then, we ate pizza and watched the first quarter of the Super Bowl. The girls were a little disturbed by the Snickers commercial that showed Betty White tackled in the mud during a football game. They said over and over, “That wasn’t very nice. He should have said he was sorry.”

Although things did not turn out like we anticipated, I think the girls had a very happy birthday. I know Chris and I thoroughly enjoyed playing with the girls all day and watching their enthusiasm of no longer being three and now being 4 YEARS OLD!!!!

Snow!

We got snow… a lot of snow! The final total was 34.5 inches, but the drifting made it over waste high in areas. Poor Chris shoveled twice on Friday night and starting at 4 am, he then shoveled another four times on Saturday. The snow was so deep on the driveway that Chris had to carry the snow to another area when the piles along the driveway were over 5 feet high. Tough work… but the driveway and sidewalks are finally clear.

On Saturday morning, our county cancelled school on Monday and Tuesday. So, it is doubtful when school will be open again since they are predicting another snowstorm on Tuesday.

My grandpa was a rural mail carrier in Nebraska. When he started the job, he delivered mail using a wagon and two mules. My grandpa was a dedicated postal employee. When he was home from college over Christmas break, my dad remembers helping my grandpa deliver mail in the snow. He said it took them two hours of shoveling and pushing to deliver mail to two houses. My grandpa took “through rain or sleet or snow” very seriously. There was not an urgent need to have my mail delivered yesterday and our roads were definitely treacherous, but I could not help but shake my head and laugh a little when I heard that mail service was cancelled on Saturday. I know my grandpa is looking down from heaven and laughing hysterically.

Making Birthday Pizzas at Generous George's

I signed up the girls for a number of restaurant birthday clubs. On Wednesday, the girls enjoyed free burgers at Fuddruckers. Last night, we went to Generous George’s for another birthday club meal. One of the items on the children’s menu was make-your-own pizza which was perfect for our girls. The girls received their chef hats and pizza supplies and went to work. Since we have made pizza at home several times, they were old pros. Gracie was thrilled to hear that bacon was one of the ingredients she could pick as a pizza topping. Bacon is Gracie’s favorite food. The girls had a great time making and eating their own pizzas and I was thrilled that I did not need to pick up grated cheese off of my kitchen floor.

Bouncing with Friends

After school, we met my friend Kelli and her handsome boys at Pump It Up for some bouncing fun. All six kids had a great time. Kelli and I also got into the act going down the slide and the obstacle course. Bouncing for an hour and a half certainly expended some of the pent up energy the girls had. It was great catching up with Kelli and watching our six kids have a blast.

It is hard to see, but there are three more at the top waiting to come down after Gracie.

Birthday Treats at School

On Thursday, the girls celebrated their birthday at school. I baked confetti cupcakes in ice cream cones for their special birthday snack and we had a very short small party.

We planned to have a small family birthday celebration on Saturday and take the girls duck pin bowling. But, the weather changed our plans. Since it sounds like we will receive around two feet of snow, we decided to take the girls bowling on another day. We will most likely be snowed in for a couple of days, so I am glad that the girls had a mini-party during snack time at school on Thursday.

A family of snow people

Last night, we got another 5 more inches of snow. But, today, the high was in the 40s. So, it was perfect weather to take the girls outside to play in the snow. Since the snow was melting rapidly, it was perfect packing snow. Thanks to three little helpers, the girls and I made a snowman family… complete with a Mickey Mouse “Daddy” snowman.

Daddy was working in his office while we were outside playing in the snow, but he took a break for a quick snowball fight.

Since we had a Mickey Daddy snowman, a snow mommy, a snow Gracie, a snow Ellie and a snow Sarah, Sarah thought she would make a snow Olive and a snow Calvin.
We loved our snow family.... too bad our snow family melted with an hour and a half. But... no worries. They are predicting at least 12 inches of snow starting on Friday. Yikes...

Introducing... Star Student Ellie

Ellie was the star student this week at school. Part of her (my) homework was to answer some questions.

What is your favorite color? Pink
What is your favorite animal? Giraffe
What is your favorite food? Cheese
What is your favorite toy? Ariel Barbie and her pony
What is your favorite thing to do at home? Play with Mickey bear
What is your favorite thing to do at school? Play with my friend Gracie
What is something you like to do with Mommy? Color and cut with scissors
What is something you like to do with Daddy? Play with him

It made me happy and sad to hear that Ellie’s favorite thing to do at school was to play with her friend, Gracie. It made me happy that Gracie is not only Ellie’s sister, but also her friend. But, it also made me sad. I hope Ellie will venture out a little and make friends with other children in her class as well.

Silly chipmunk Ellie with a mouth full of grapes

Happy Groundhog Day!!!

What, six more weeks of winter? That sounds about right considering we got snow on Saturday, it is starting to snow again today and I heard a storm with substantial accumulation is coming on Friday. Spring… please come soon! My three little girls need to get out of the house.

"I'm Elmo Sarah"

On Tuesdays, the girls go to Spanish class in Preschool. We try to reinforce what the girls are learning in Spanish at home (really Chris has since the only Spanish words I know are the little tidbits I learn courtesy of Handy Manny in the morning). Chris has been counting with the girls in Spanish and this morning he taught the girls to say, “Me llamo.” Sarah was the only one of the three that was interested in repeating what Chris was trying to teach them this morning. On the trip to school this morning, Sarah practiced saying, “Me llamo Sarah.” At least it sounded like that was what she was saying since I was in the driver seat and Sarah was in the back of the car. Then Sarah asked, “Can I still be Snow White when I get home from school?” I replied, “You can pretend to be Snow White any time you want.” Sarah then said, “But Daddy said I had to be Elmo at school.” So, she thought Daddy told her to say, “I’m Elmo Sarah.” Sarah was relieved that she could still pretend to be Snow White and did have to be Elmo. I suppose we need to work on our Spanish a little longer.

Yikes... maybe Sarah is having flashbacks from February 2008????

Sunday Afternoon Fun

After a great afternoon of sledding, we went to Aunt Karen, Uncle Randy and Zachary’s house. The girls opened birthday gifts, Valentine’s gifts and souvenir’s from Zachary’s first trip to Disney World. It was like Christmas!!! Randy and Chris bowled on Wii while the four children had a great time playing with Zachary’s toys. We then watched “Enchanted” in their theater with popcorn. Zachary’s Lightening McQueen car was in the theater and was too tempting not to play with. Zachary and the girls took turns pretending to zoom, zoom, zoom! We then enjoyed a great dinner. A big thank you to Aunt Karen, Uncle Randy Zachary for hosting our afternoon of fun.

Sometimes I think that Randy and Chris are really twins. They certainly think alike... and very often dress alike (by accident of course).

Down the hill we go, laughing all the way

Saturday, we got 6 inches of snow (instead of the forecasted 1 inch). Sunday was bright and sunny and we thought it would be the perfect day to take the girls sledding. So… after church and lunch, we bundled up the girls and took them down the street to the elementary school to go sledding down the hill. Last year, we went sledding in the backyard. Katie brought her sled over to our house and Uncle Pete ran down the slope (I am not sure it could be large enough to be considered a hill) pulling the gang (Kate, Gracie, Ellie and Sarah). So, Sunday was the first time the girls went sledding down a hill thanks to gravity and not Uncle Pete’s muscle power with their new saucer sleds. Finding sleds in Virginia is a tough, but after searching everywhere for literally months, I finally found three sleds at Target a couple of weeks ago.

I knew the girls would love sledding, but I was not certain how long the fun would last. I thought they would tucker out fast after sledding down the hill and walking back up the hill a couple of times. To be honest, I thought they would walk up the hill and I would carry their sleds up the hill behind them. I was very wrong. The girls could have sledded down the hill all afternoon. Once they reached the bottom, they picked up their sled and headed up the hill as fast as they could. Occasionally, they ran into each other or “wiped out.” Instead of crying, they laughed. Since it sounds like the weather will be above freezing this week, the snow will not last long. I love the thought of a warming trend, but I would love to take the girls sledding again soon.

Bobo takes a trip to Krispy Kreme

We planned to drive to Hershey today with our friends Maura, Macaire, Seamus, Aoife and Eilish. But since the weather forecast predicted 12+ inches of snow in Richmond and an inch in our area, if the system shifted north, there could be possible treacherous driving conditions. We decided not to risk bad driving conditions on a long car trip. As an alternative, we decided to go to Krispy Kreme to get heart shaped donuts before it started snowing. The weather was fine when we left our house. When we exited the toll road onto the Beltway, flurries started to fall but everything was clear. We, including Bobo the monkey, met our friends at Krispy Kreme about 9:30. Everyone was excited to see the heart shaped donuts baked and glazed… but instead of heart shaped donuts, regular glazed donuts were being made. Our friends had never experienced hot Krispy Kreme donuts fresh off the conveyor belt, so we were excited to share it with them. The girls gobbled up the donuts in record time. I was shocked to see Ellie and Gracie each eat almost three donuts. When we left Krispy Kreme, the weather was completely different than it was 45 minutes earlier. Snow covered the road…. so much for avoiding treacherous driving conditions. On the trip home on the Beltway, traffic was traveling very slowly, on the average 20 mph. It as a long trip home but was certainly worth the effort for warm Krispy Kreme donuts on a cold day.

Not so fun Fun Dip

I’ll admit it. I liked Fun Dip when I was a child. I also liked Peeps. Although I still enjoy Peeps (especially if they are roasted), I have not eaten Fun Dip since I was 12 years old. I love sweets, but licking flavored granulated sugar off of a sugar stick no longer seems appetizing. The girls brought home a birthday goodie bag from school on Thursday. One of the treats was a package of Fun Dip. The girls begged and pleaded if they could eat their treats from school. I was reluctant, but told the girls if they ate a good lunch, they could try their Fun Dip. With the Fun Dip daggling like a carrot in front of them, they each ate a great lunch. So, they tried their Fun Dip. Ellie and Gracie did not like it (I was secretly happy), but Sarah loved it (no surprises… she inherited her mommy’s sweet tooth).

3 Star Students

Each child in the girls’ preschool class has the opportunity to be the star student for one week. Typically, it is the week of the child’s birthday unless the child has a summer birthday or you are a girl that shares her birthday with her two sisters. Ellie, Gracie and Sarah will each have their own special week to be the star student. Ellie will be the star student next week, then Gracie and finally Sarah. The star student can bring two of her favorite things in to talk about during circle time. She also brings home the class mascot, Bobo, the monkey. She needs to take care of Bobo and take him along on her adventures over the weekend. And, Mommy has homework. I was told to fill out forms about Ellie, Gracie and Sarah’s favorite things, according to them. The form will be placed in a class book to share. I will have custody of Bobo for next 3 weeks. It is a lot of pressure safeguarding the beloved class mascot for the next 3 weeks…. especially since he needs to go out and about with us over the weekends. Yikes… Mommy has homework and responsibilities!

A Slumber Party at Tutu and Papa

Chris travels a lot for business. Thankfully, it is very rare that Chris is gone over a weekend. But, Chris had an early Monday morning meeting in NYC and left Sunday afternoon. So, I decided to take advantage of the opportunity and go to Tutu and Papa’s house. We did a little shopping, the girls got their haircut (one of the best haircuts they have even gotten… their hair looks adorable), the girls played in the bathtub and we ended the evening with a slumber party in our jammies complete with popcorn, juice and a movie with the lights dimed. In the world of a three year old (who is almost four), it is thrilling staying up late and sleeping on the floor in a sleeping bag. I know I felt the same way when I was their age, but now I love going to bed early (and even napping when I can) and sleeping in a comfy bed. I wonder when sleeping on the floor in a sleeping bag (when a comfortable bed is sitting next to you) is no longer as thrilling? I hope the girls enjoy their slumber parties for a long time because I love watching them jump up and down in excitement with even the mention of a possible slumber party/movie night. For breakfast, Tutu made everyone pancakes that we gobbled up in record time. Although we missed Daddy, we had a great time at Tutu and Papa’s house. We hope they invite us back for another slumber party again soon.

When Daddy came home from his trip, the girls asked him if he saw the Statute of Liberty in "New'ork." He said although he was in New York, he did not have the opportunity to see the Statute of Liberty. The girls immediately said, “We saw Statute of Liberties.” And, they were right. On our trip to Tutu and Papa’s house, we saw 7 people on the corner in Statute of Liberty costumes and a huge blow-up Statute of Liberty. We also saw a man in a Statute of Liberty costume on the corner on our trip home from Costco yesterday. With tax season in full swing, Liberty Tax Service is ramping up their advertising and the girls love it. How silly is it that we saw so many Statute of Liberties at home and Chris did not see the real one on his trip to New York.

As the girls say, “It was a really big day!”

We had a huge day on Saturday. We started off the day meeting Nana, Grandaddy, Aunt Karen, Uncle Randy and Zachary at Chick-fil-a for a yummy breakfast. Chick-fil-a’s breakfast biscuits are delicious.

We then went to the Dulles Expo Center to see the toy train show. It was HUGE! The train displays were the size of small cities. Every scale of train was represented. There were some serious train enthusiasts as well as a lot of excited children.

Our next activity of the day was to see a play at Robinson High School. We saw the 9th grade production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Nana knew one of the drama boosters and was able to reserve front row seats. We were not sure if the girls could sit still through an entire play, but they did. In fact, Sarah was completely mesmerized. Surprisingly, the highlight of the production for the girls was seeing and touching the bad apple. When Snow White bit the apple and fell to the ground, the apple rolled out of her hand and off the stage. The apple landed a foot in front of the girls. Ellie and Gracie could not take their eyes off of the apple. It was very disturbing being so close to the apple, but not touching it. But, when the play was over and they could pick up the apple, they were in 7th heaven. They could hold Snow White’s apple! It does not get much better than that in the life of a three year old. Since the production was at 2:00, most of the crowd was probably under 8 years old. The age of the audience was obviously apparent when the prince kissed Snow White to wake her. There was a “Yuck! Euuuuwww!” that echoed throughout the theater. I could not help but chuckle. After the performance, the cast was outside of the theater talking to the audience. The girls met the seven dwarfs and even, Snow White. They were thrilled. Although the actors were only 14 or 15 years old, the production was very good and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

After the play, we went back to Nana and Grandaddy’s house for dinner. Nana fixed a wonderful belated birthday meal for Chris. She fixed all of Chris’ favorite foods and even two of his favorite desserts, coconut cream pie and a brownie pie. The girls had a surprise waiting for them at Nana and Grandaddy’s house… a battery powered train. Nana and Grandaddy knew that Zachary and the girls love trains, so they purchased a Polar Express train for their grandchildren to enjoy. The girls love the train. It went backwards and forwards all evening. I am sure they exhausted the battery life in that single evening.

A fun afternoon with Tutu and Papa

Since Tutu and Papa were in town for a dentist visit, they stopped by for a visit.

Ellie gave Papa a makeover complete with hair, make-up and nails.
We then played a couple of games of Zingo and Cootie.
We finally got the dance cam out for a little fun. The girls took turns flying like a bird in Tutu’s arms.

What do you want to be when you grow up (January 2010)?

In the car on the trip home after dinner tonight, we asked the girls what they wanted to be when they grew up. Things have changed a little since the last time we asked them. Sarah said she wanted to be an artist. Ellie wanted to be “a beautiful princess.” And, Gracie said she wanted to be a puppy dog.

Dr. Mom

We had a hopper ball incident today. Three hopper balls and three wild three year olds bouncing in a small area is trouble. Luckily, two boo boo bunnies and a boo boo Scooby Doo made everything better.

The girls' go on a road trip

Since Monday was the beginning of priority registration for preschool next year and Chris and I had a conference with the girls’ preschool teachers also on Monday, we asked Nana and Grandaddy if they could come early on Monday and watch the girls. When I saw the number of classes offered for 4 year olds and listened to worrisome chatter from other parents, I thought I should arrive early to insure the girls’ enrollment next year. The more Chris and I thought about getting three slots, the earlier we thought I should get in line for priority registration. We finally agreed on a 6:15 arrival. Since that would make a very early morning for Nana and Grandaddy, we asked if they would like to spend the night. As an alternative, they proposed picking up the girls on Sunday afternoon and spending the night in a hotel in Hershey, PA. This was the first trip that we were away from the girls overnight and they were not at our house, Tutu and Papa’s house or Nana and Grandaddy’s house.... a new experience for the girls and us.

When we told the girls that they were going to Hershey with Nana and Grandaddy and spending the night in a hotel, they were thrilled (jumped up and down and squealed). The girls loved the entire hotel experience – sleeping in their sleeping bags, “swimming” in the big garden bathtub and eating breakfast in bed courtesy of Grandaddy. The girls also showed Nana and Grandaddy their favorite things at Chocolate World including the chocolate ride with the singing cows, the ice cream counter and the Hershey Kiss factory worker experience. They also stopped at Boyd’s Bear on the trip to Hershey and the trip home where they picked up a couple of new friends, Buffy the baby penguin, BooBoo the duck and Snowman the dog.

Since the girls were out and about, Chris and I decided to take advantage of the opportunity and have a date night. We went out to dinner and had a relaxing, leisurely meal. We then came home and watched a little of the playoffs and finished the evening watching a movie that did not contain a single Disney character and was not rated G! It was wonderful to have one-on-one time with Chris. The house was so quiet. But, it seemed unnatural and empty. However, since the girls were on vacation, I was able to be the 12th person in line at 6:05 on Monday morning and hopefully insure that the girls will be in our first choice of preschool class. Fingers crossed!

We love to floss!

Good dental health is important in our house. Every morning, we brush the girls’ teeth (to make sure they get a thorough cleaning) and every evening, the girls brush their own teeth before bed. Unfortunately, we have not been very good about flossing the girls’ teeth. To remedy that situation, I picked up DenTek’s Fun Flossers. They have brightly colored plastic handles and the floss is fruit flavored. The girls actually enjoyed flossing their teeth. In fact, when we were running errands yesterday Sarah asked me twice whether she could floss her teeth again when we got home. My child is actually begging to floss her teeth? Can you believe it?

Yikes... while rereading this post, it occurred to me that it sounds like a commercial. That was certainly not my intent. I was simply excited that the girls were begging to flossing.

A visit to the aquarium

I have been dying to take the girls to the aquarium. We have not been there since September, so we decided to drive up to Baltimore today. Although it was a little crowded, we had a great time at the aquarium. We saw fish of all colors, shapes and sizes, stingrays, jellyfish, sharks, turtles and even crocodiles. But, the coolest thing we saw was a small octopus moving along the glass. It was amazing.

Running errands can be fun

I had several errands I needed to run on Friday. Although it is not easy taking three girls in and out of car seats and walking them though busy parking lots, the girls were great little shoppers and I got a lot accomplished.

After the girls were absolute angels while waiting for my car to be inspected, we went to the pet store to buy cat food for Cal and Olive. We had a great time at the pet store. We saw cats, turtles, Chinese water dragons, chinchillas, parakeets, hamsters, guinea pigs, frogs and even dogs at the salon (dogs being groomed). I had a lot of errands to run, but since the girls were having so much fun watching all of the animals at the pet store, it took me almost an hour to buy cat food.

Watching the turtle

Sarah loved watching the rat just like the one in the movie Ratatouille (although it freaked me out a little)

Finally... a nice day outside

Yesterday, we had a humidifier installed in the house. Not only do we now have humidity inside to make life a little more comfortable, but we also have 10 holes in the basement ceiling that Chris will need to repair. Ugh! Although it is now more comfortable inside, we did not get out and about yesterday thanks to the several hours it took to install the humidifier. To keep our sanity, I like to get out of the house once a day. Since we have had extremely cold weather that has not been possible lately. Today it was nicer than it has been for a long time. So, I decided to break out the tricycles, scooters and baby doll strollers. It was great getting fresh air and soaking up a little sunshine.

The girls have difficulty pedaling a tricycle… but we still try. Ellie is having fun trying.

Fun with Shannon and Abby

Our friend, Shannon, and her dog, Abby, came over for dinner last night. Shannon is a very special friend. Shannon did most of my ultrasounds when I was pregnant. She first met the girls when they were little blobs in my belly and now they are walking, talking little people with opinions. Time flies!

The girls loved playing with Abby. They could have played fetch with her all evening, but I think the girls tuckered out poor little Abby. Abby was no match for three excited four year olds.

The girls talked Shannon’s ear off and coned her into playing a game a Zingo (or two or three) and Cootie. Lately, anyone that enters our house is required to play a game of Zingo, Cootie or Candyland.

Tumbling... again....

Grandaddy got wonderful pictures at the girls’ tumbling class on Monday. So… I had to share.
