How to wear out three wild four year olds
First, we waded through the front yard sliding down the bank to the sidewalk. We did it over and over.
Then we threw snowballs in the street (when cars were not passing of course).
Then we made snow angels on the side of the mountain…..
Mission accomplished! Three tired little girls and a house that was finally quiet.

Happy 4th birthday Gracie, Ellie and Sarah!
It is hard for me to believe that my babies are four years old. Thanks to the massive snowfall, our big birthday plans changed. We rescheduled our duckpin bowling outing on Saturday and on Sunday neither set of grandparents could make it to our house for cake. So, we had to find alternative ways to make the girls’ birthday extra special. Chris and I blew up 100 balloons and put them in the family room. The girls were thrilled to see the room filled with balloons when they woke up in the morning. Balloons were flying everywhere all day. Since getting to church was impossible, we decided to get the girls out of the house and play in the snow. The snow was too deep for the girls to play in, but they were able to stand on the sidewalk and destroy Daddy’s shoveled walls of snow. The girls were thrilled to have an instant snow fort that was created when Chris moved his car from the street and into the driveway. Their snow fort had a slide and lots of big snowballs to carry around and smash on the driveway. After two days of snow falling constantly and being confined inside, it was nice to be outside in the sunshine.
Snow!
On Saturday morning, our county cancelled school on Monday and Tuesday. So, it is doubtful when school will be open again since they are predicting another snowstorm on Tuesday.
My grandpa was a rural mail carrier in Nebraska. When he started the job, he delivered mail using a wagon and two mules. My grandpa was a dedicated postal employee. When he was home from college over Christmas break, my dad remembers helping my grandpa deliver mail in the snow. He said it took them two hours of shoveling and pushing to deliver mail to two houses. My grandpa took “through rain or sleet or snow” very seriously. There was not an urgent need to have my mail delivered yesterday and our roads were definitely treacherous, but I could not help but shake my head and laugh a little when I heard that mail service was cancelled on Saturday. I know my grandpa is looking down from heaven and laughing hysterically.

Making Birthday Pizzas at Generous George's
Bouncing with Friends
After school, we met my friend Kelli and her handsome boys at Pump It Up for some bouncing fun. All six kids had a great time. Kelli and I also got into the act going down the slide and the obstacle course. Bouncing for an hour and a half certainly expended some of the pent up energy the girls had. It was great catching up with Kelli and watching our six kids have a blast.

Birthday Treats at School
We planned to have a small family birthday celebration on Saturday and take the girls duck pin bowling. But, the weather changed our plans. Since it sounds like we will receive around two feet of snow, we decided to take the girls bowling on another day. We will most likely be snowed in for a couple of days, so I am glad that the girls had a mini-party during snack time at school on Thursday.

Introducing... Star Student Ellie
What is your favorite color? Pink
What is your favorite animal? Giraffe
What is your favorite food? Cheese
What is your favorite toy? Ariel Barbie and her pony
What is your favorite thing to do at home? Play with Mickey bear
What is your favorite thing to do at school? Play with my friend Gracie
What is something you like to do with Mommy? Color and cut with scissors
What is something you like to do with Daddy? Play with him
It made me happy and sad to hear that Ellie’s favorite thing to do at school was to play with her friend, Gracie. It made me happy that Gracie is not only Ellie’s sister, but also her friend. But, it also made me sad. I hope Ellie will venture out a little and make friends with other children in her class as well.

"I'm Elmo Sarah"
On Tuesdays, the girls go to Spanish class in Preschool. We try to reinforce what the girls are learning in Spanish at home (really Chris has since the only Spanish words I know are the little tidbits I learn courtesy of Handy Manny in the morning). Chris has been counting with the girls in Spanish and this morning he taught the girls to say, “Me llamo.” Sarah was the only one of the three that was interested in repeating what Chris was trying to teach them this morning. On the trip to school this morning, Sarah practiced saying, “Me llamo Sarah.” At least it sounded like that was what she was saying since I was in the driver seat and Sarah was in the back of the car. Then Sarah asked, “Can I still be Snow White when I get home from school?” I replied, “You can pretend to be Snow White any time you want.” Sarah then said, “But Daddy said I had to be Elmo at school.” So, she thought Daddy told her to say, “I’m Elmo Sarah.” Sarah was relieved that she could still pretend to be Snow White and did have to be Elmo. I suppose we need to work on our Spanish a little longer.
Yikes... maybe Sarah is having flashbacks from February 2008????

Sunday Afternoon Fun
Zachary zooming aroundDown the hill we go, laughing all the way
Saturday, we got 6 inches of snow (instead of the forecasted 1 inch). Sunday was bright and sunny and we thought it would be the perfect day to take the girls sledding. So… after church and lunch, we bundled up the girls and took them down the street to the elementary school to go sledding down the hill. Last year, we went sledding in the backyard. Katie brought her sled over to our house and Uncle Pete ran down the slope (I am not sure it could be large enough to be considered a hill) pulling the gang (Kate, Gracie, Ellie and Sarah). So, Sunday was the first time the girls went sledding down a hill thanks to gravity and not Uncle Pete’s muscle power with their new saucer sleds. Finding sleds in Virginia is a tough, but after searching everywhere for literally months, I finally found three sleds at Target a couple of weeks ago.

3 Star Students
Each child in the girls’ preschool class has the opportunity to be the star student for one week. Typically, it is the week of the child’s birthday unless the child has a summer birthday or you are a girl that shares her birthday with her two sisters. Ellie, Gracie and Sarah will each have their own special week to be the star student. Ellie will be the star student next week, then Gracie and finally Sarah. The star student can bring two of her favorite things in to talk about during circle time. She also brings home the class mascot, Bobo, the monkey. She needs to take care of Bobo and take him along on her adventures over the weekend. And, Mommy has homework. I was told to fill out forms about Ellie, Gracie and Sarah’s favorite things, according to them. The form will be placed in a class book to share. I will have custody of Bobo for next 3 weeks. It is a lot of pressure safeguarding the beloved class mascot for the next 3 weeks…. especially since he needs to go out and about with us over the weekends. Yikes… Mommy has homework and responsibilities!

A Slumber Party at Tutu and Papa

When Daddy came home from his trip, the girls asked him if he saw the Statute of Liberty in "New'ork." He said although he was in New York, he did not have the opportunity to see the Statute of Liberty. The girls immediately said, “We saw Statute of Liberties.” And, they were right. On our trip to Tutu and Papa’s house, we saw 7 people on the corner in Statute of Liberty costumes and a huge blow-up Statute of Liberty. We also saw a man in a Statute of Liberty costume on the corner on our trip home from Costco yesterday. With tax season in full swing, Liberty Tax Service is ramping up their advertising and the girls love it. How silly is it that we saw so many Statute of Liberties at home and Chris did not see the real one on his trip to New York.
As the girls say, “It was a really big day!”
We then went to the Dulles Expo Center to see the toy train show. It was HUGE! The train displays were the size of small cities. Every scale of train was represented. There were some serious train enthusiasts as well as a lot of excited children.
Our next activity of the day was to see a play at Robinson High School. We saw the 9th grade production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Nana knew one of the drama boosters and was able to reserve front row seats. We were not sure if the girls could sit still through an entire play, but they did. In fact, Sarah was completely mesmerized. Surprisingly, the highlight of the production for the girls was seeing and touching the bad apple. When Snow White bit the apple and fell to the ground, the apple rolled out of her hand and off the stage. The apple landed a foot in front of the girls. Ellie and Gracie could not take their eyes off of the apple. It was very disturbing being so close to the apple, but not touching it. But, when the play was over and they could pick up the apple, they were in 7th heaven. They could hold Snow White’s apple! It does not get much better than that in the life of a three year old. Since the production was at 2:00, most of the crowd was probably under 8 years old. The age of the audience was obviously apparent when the prince kissed Snow White to wake her. There was a “Yuck! Euuuuwww!” that echoed throughout the theater. I could not help but chuckle. After the performance, the cast was outside of the theater talking to the audience. The girls met the seven dwarfs and even, Snow White. They were thrilled. Although the actors were only 14 or 15 years old, the production was very good and we thoroughly enjoyed it.
After the play, we went back to Nana and Grandaddy’s house for dinner. Nana fixed a wonderful belated birthday meal for Chris. She fixed all of Chris’ favorite foods and even two of his favorite desserts, coconut cream pie and a brownie pie. The girls had a surprise waiting for them at Nana and Grandaddy’s house… a battery powered train. Nana and Grandaddy knew that Zachary and the girls love trains, so they purchased a Polar Express train for their grandchildren to enjoy. The girls love the train. It went backwards and forwards all evening. I am sure they exhausted the battery life in that single evening.

What do you want to be when you grow up (January 2010)?
In the car on the trip home after dinner tonight, we asked the girls what they wanted to be when they grew up. Things have changed a little since the last time we asked them. Sarah said she wanted to be an artist. Ellie wanted to be “a beautiful princess.” And, Gracie said she wanted to be a puppy dog.

Dr. Mom
The girls' go on a road trip
When we told the girls that they were going to Hershey with Nana and Grandaddy and spending the night in a hotel, they were thrilled (jumped up and down and squealed). The girls loved the entire hotel experience – sleeping in their sleeping bags, “swimming” in the big garden bathtub and eating breakfast in bed courtesy of Grandaddy. The girls also showed Nana and Grandaddy their favorite things at Chocolate World including the chocolate ride with the singing cows, the ice cream counter and the Hershey Kiss factory worker experience. They also stopped at Boyd’s Bear on the trip to Hershey and the trip home where they picked up a couple of new friends, Buffy the baby penguin, BooBoo the duck and Snowman the dog.
Since the girls were out and about, Chris and I decided to take advantage of the opportunity and have a date night. We went out to dinner and had a relaxing, leisurely meal. We then came home and watched a little of the playoffs and finished the evening watching a movie that did not contain a single Disney character and was not rated G! It was wonderful to have one-on-one time with Chris. The house was so quiet. But, it seemed unnatural and empty. However, since the girls were on vacation, I was able to be the 12th person in line at 6:05 on Monday morning and hopefully insure that the girls will be in our first choice of preschool class. Fingers crossed!

We love to floss!

Yikes... while rereading this post, it occurred to me that it sounds like a commercial. That was certainly not my intent. I was simply excited that the girls were begging to flossing.

Running errands can be fun
After the girls were absolute angels while waiting for my car to be inspected, we went to the pet store to buy cat food for Cal and Olive. We had a great time at the pet store. We saw cats, turtles, Chinese water dragons, chinchillas, parakeets, hamsters, guinea pigs, frogs and even dogs at the salon (dogs being groomed). I had a lot of errands to run, but since the girls were having so much fun watching all of the animals at the pet store, it took me almost an hour to buy cat food.
Watching the turtle
Sarah loved watching the rat just like the one in the movie Ratatouille (although it freaked me out a little)

Fun with Shannon and Abby
The girls loved playing with Abby. They could have played fetch with her all evening, but I think the girls tuckered out poor little Abby. Abby was no match for three excited four year olds.
Gracie and Abby
The girls talked Shannon’s ear off and coned her into playing a game a Zingo (or two or three) and Cootie. Lately, anyone that enters our house is required to play a game of Zingo, Cootie or Candyland.
